About Athens Georgia

Athens, Georgia, is a consolidated city-county known as Athens-Clarke County located in the northeastern part of the state. According to the census, there were 115,452 residents in 2010. This number includes all of the consolidated city-county with the exception of Winterville and part of Bogart. Toward the end of the 1700s, Cedar Shoals-an old trading settlement on the banks of the Oconee River-stood where Athens stands today. On July 25, 1801, John Milledge bought 633 acres of land from Daniel Easley and donated it to the University of Georgia, which was the first state-supported university. Milledge named the surrounding area Athens after the city in Greece that was home to the academy of Plato and Aristotle.  Presently, there are thirteen neighborhoods in the consolidated city-county of Athens-Clarke County, which include Pulaski Heights, Normaltown, Beechwood, and Carr's Hill. There are many points of interest in Athens-Clarke County, such as the State Botanical Garden of Georgia, the Georgia Museum of Art, and one of the two remaining double-barreled cannons produced during the American Civil War. Many notable people have come from Athens, including actress Kim Basinger, former NFL player Willie Green, founding members of The B-52s Ricky and Cindy Wilson, MLB player Brian McCann, and aviation pioneer Ben T. Epps.
